Industry Visits for Schools

The industry has secured funding to host a number of hospitality careers events for schools to introduce students, teachers, careers advisors and work experience co-ordinators to the range of job opportunities available in this exciting industry.

Schools bring groups of students to a tourism business for a morning session, finishing after lunch. The session begins with an overview of the industry in Cornwall and the opportunity it brings for employment, a talk by a young person working in the industry who has progressed well in their career and will inspire others, a DVD made for a young audience to give more case studies and inspiration. The main part of the sesion is visits to 5 or 6 hotel departments to learn about the jobs and have a go at some tasks, such as cocktail making, decorating a desert, checking in a guest, laying a table, checking housekeeping standards or rehearsing with the entertainments team! A young person from each department will talk to the students about their job, why they like the industry and how they have progressed.

The feedback from students and teachers is always very positive and helps to give an up-to-date impression of life in this dynamic industry.
